Mass Media & Social Construction of Reality
From Keith Ablow, Fox Media psychologist
http://thinkprogress.org/...
Assuming Marianne Gingrich’s allegations are true: Newt Gingrich reacted to news of his own behavior by attempting to justify asking Marianne for an “open marriage” and thereafter promptly dumping her for Callista.
While most would be repelled by such actions, Dr. Keith Ablow of Fox News’ “Medical A-Team” believes Gingrich’s personal choices would not negatively impact his performance as president. In fact, Ablow argues’ that Gingrich’ ability to attract so many women is a sign that the rest of the country will fall for him too.

Monmouth poll released last week noted that 21 percent of South Carolinians said the endorsement of their state's Republican governor made them "less likely" to support Romney. Exit poll interview, The 'Mitt Romney development' influenced the vote: "I don't like taxes," Bill said. "I don't like people who got all that money and won't tell you about it. I don't like that Romney is payin' 15 percent and I'm payin' 28. It doesn't make sense to me, so it was just a bunch of things." Gingrich, on the other hand, is a man who, "sometimes says things he shouldn't" but "doesn’t need notes and stuff like that."
Excerpts, Politico By ROGER SIMON
Anger, umbrage and bitterness are so much a part of Gingrich’s public persona that he likes to attack the very concept of happiness. The “left” is a broad category to Gingrich. It includes liberals, socialists, anti-religious bigots, i.e. Democrats, most of the media, some misguided Republicans, and, well, anybody who opposes Newt Gingrich.
Gingrich has a fondness for quoting the Founding Fathers but he now says that when they wrote “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” in the Declaration of Independence that it does not mean what we think it means.
“Happiness in the 18th century meant wisdom and virtue, not hedonism,” Gingrich says without a scintilla of embarrassment, even though he, himself, has pursued a fair amount of hedonism in his lifetime.
If we don’t have happiness to look forward to, what does Gingrich offer? Work. Effort. Struggle. “Work is something you need,” Gingrich says. “I don’t think it’s inappropriate for a 12- or 13-year-old to push a mop.
Only Mitt has the money and organization to beat him, Gingrich believes, but Romney will fail because Romney’s speeches are filled with optimism and other infantile notions.
Americans don’t want sunshine, lollipops and rainbows. They want blood, toil, tears and sweat. They want a dependably gloomy man in the Oval Office. They want Newt!
And Newt believes they will elect him come November. “It will shock the country,” Newt says. “It will shock the world. And shock is what we need.”

What did South Carolina voters really admire about Newt? His ability to both play the race card and then summon up the righteous indignation of a victim whenever anyone even started to call him on it. That's a model for the campaign the GOP base wants to see.
The New York Times doesn't mince words about Newt Gingrich's Southern Strategy.
Newt Gingrich won the primary by a decisive margin of more than 13 percentage points, and there is no mystery about how he did it. Two-thirds of voters interviewed in exit polls said they made their decision on the basis of the two South Carolina debates, where Mr. Gingrich exploited racial resentment and hatred of the news media to connect with furious voters.
Newt's Bad Ideas - LINK
Typical for Gingrich’s career: His ideas on the big issues are standard-issue conservatism, and they’re mixed in with occasional flights of fancy (illuminate highways using orbiting mirrors that reflect moonlight), pure plays to resentment and fear (execute 19-year-olds who are stupidly trying to smuggle two ounces of pot from Mexico), and a lot of small, specific ideas, like the Louisiana port reconstruction.
But perhaps I’m wrong. Can anyone name some actually big, actually workable, actually new ideas that Gingrich has been associated with during his career? What has he brought to the table that wouldn’t have been there in his absence? On the other hand he does have the largest and most fiscally irresponsible tax cut in the race though he doesn’t mention it much. - LINK
